The Center for Nuclear Spectrometry for Energy, the Environment, Materials and Health
The 3 MV Tandetron Accelerator was installed and commissioned in 2012 and is mainly dedicated to applied research. The facility is fully equipped to perform a variety of studies:
| Ion Beam Analysis on a wide range of materials | using techniques such as Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), elastic recoil analysis (ERDA) or particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) |
|---|---|
| Implantation and Irradiation experiments with ion beams | for different types of advanced materials (in order to modify their properties or test their radiation hardness), or for biological samples (to test the effects on cell cultures) |
| Cross-Section Measurements | for nuclear fusion and other reactions of interest to nuclear astrophysics |
Romanian Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Lab
The 1MV TandetronTM accelerator was installed and commissioned in 2012 and is the only Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) installation in Romania. The importance of AMS lies in its unmatched sensitivity in analysing isotopic ratios. A single atom can be identified among one million billion other atoms, which represents a huge advantage for applications in various fields of research:
| Archaeology | Artefact dating with organic compounds, palaeoanthropology studies |
|---|---|
| Geology and Palaeogeomorphology | Determining geological erosion rates and analysing erosion characteristics |
| Atmospheric physics and Palaeoclimatology | 10Be as atmospheric transport processes tracer |
| Medicine | investigations of 14C as a medical marker and 26Al as a pharmaceutical marker |
| Environmental radiocontamination | Nuclear pollution control, monitoring of nuclear activities, oceanography studies |
| Nuclear astrophysics | Tracing the origin of elements to astrophysical processes |
Center for Radiopharmaceutical Research
The TR-19 Cyclotron is a versatile, fully automated device that accelerates negative ions from an external source to an energy of up to 19 MeV. Together with hot cells for radiochemical processing and pharmaceutical preparation, the cyclotron is an integrated research infrastructure.
| Outstanding irradiation capacity | can provide the necessary medical radioisotopes for Positron Emission Tomography at national level |
|---|---|
| Impressive adaptability | contributes to research (fundamental, preclinical and clinical) and development of radiopharmaceuticals, as well as development of medical applications of nuclear physics |
Testing, trials and experiments with radiation sources
We use state-of-the-art equipment for imaging and spectrometry studies with a wide range of applications. Some of the fields that we are particularly engaged in are:
| Archaeometry | Imaging and chemical composition analysis of artefacts and heritage objects |
|---|---|
| Detection systems | Evaluation of active materials for radiation detection and acquisition |
